Views on ‘how is Brexit going?’

When asked ‘How is Brexit going?’, half of Britons think that Brexit has been more of a failure than success, including 28% of Leave voters. Interestingly, a smaller proportion of younger respondents (44%) see it as a failure than older ones (52% and 57%).

Figure 17.5: Is Brexit more of a success or failure (January 2025)?

From Ipsos January 2025 poll, 51% see it as failure; 13% see it as a success. Also includes results by age, by 2016 referendum vote, and by GE2024 vote.

Views on ‘how has Brexit has gone?’

Six in ten Britons (62%) feel that Brexit has been more of a failure, against 11% who feel that it has been more of a success (YouGov, January 2025 – see Figure 17.6). However, a significant 20% of Britons consider it to be neither, plus 8% who didn’t know.

Of the Britons who say that Brexit has been more a failure, 63% say it was always going to be a failure. They say there was nothing that any government could have done to make it a success. This is against 27% who feel that Brexit could have been a success, but the way it was done made it fail.
